Kerala Rain in Old Sayings (Malayalam Pazhamozhi on Rain each month)

 Chingam (Aug–Sept)

ചിങ്ങത്തിൽ മഴ ചീർത്താൽ ഓണം വറ്റും. 

ചിങ്ങത്തിൽ പെയ്യുന്ന മഴ ചിരി പോലെ.

"If it pours in Chingam, Onam will be dry. It Should only drizzle" 

Suggests rain should be light and brief, like a smile, during the harvest.

Kanni (Sept–Oct)

കന്നിപ്പൊടി മഴ വിതയ്ക്കാൻ കൊള്ളാം.

കന്നിയിൽ മഴ പെയ്താൽ കുന്നിലും നെല്ല്.

"Kanni's dusty rain is good for sowing." 

Light rain that settles the dust; if it rains well, even the hills will yield rice.

It rains for 20 days this month.

Thulam (Oct–Nov)

തുലാമാസത്തെ ഇടി കുടത്തിനകത്തെ ഇടി. തുലം പത്തു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ മരപ്പൊത്തിലാ.

"Thunder in Thulam is like thunder in a pot." 

After the 10th of Thulam, take shelter; refers to dangerous lightning.

Vrischikam (Nov–Dec)

വൃശ്ചികത്തിൽ വെളുപ്പിനെ പെയ്യും. വൃശ്ചികക്കാറ്റിൽ മഴ ഒളിക്കും.

"In Vrischikam, it rains at dawn." The wind of this month often "hides" the rain, leading to dry, misty spells.

Dhanu (Dec–Jan)

ധനുവിൽ മഴ പെയ്താൽ ധരണി നശിക്കും. ധനുമാസത്തിൽ തുള്ളി മഴയില്ല.

"If it rains in Dhanu, the earth suffers." Usually a dry month; rain here is seen as an anomaly that ruins crops.

Makaram (Jan–Feb) 

മകരത്തിൽ മഴ പെയ്താൽ മലയാളം മുടിയും."If it rains in Makaram, Malayalam (the land) is doomed." 

The most ominous sign of a broken cycle.

Kumbham (Feb–Mar)

കുംഭത്തിൽ മഴ പെയ്താൽ കുപ്പയിലും ചോറ്.

"Rain in Kumbham means (gemstones) rice even in the rubbish heap." A rare, lucky rain that guarantees wealth.

Meenam (Mar–Apr)

മീനത്തിൽ മഴ പെയ്താൽ മീനിനു കണ്ണില്ലാതാകും."

Rain in Meenam blinds the fish." Refers to the abundance in seafood.

Medam (Apr–May)

മേടത്തിൽ മഴ പെയ്താൽ മേനി കൊയ്യാം. മേടപ്പൊൻവേല കിട്ടണമെങ്കിൽ മേടത്തിൽ മഴ പെയ്യണം.

"If it rains in Medam, you reap a bumper crop." The vital Vishumazha that prepares the ground for the new year.

Edavam (May–June)

ഇടവപ്പാതി കടഞ്ഞ പെയ്ത്ത്.

"The mid-Edavam rain is a churned pouring." The start of the relentless Southwest Monsoon.

Midhunam (June–July)

മിഥുനത്തിൽ മിറികയും പാത്ര.

Describes the month where the rain is so steady it feels like a heavy, protective shroud over the world.

Karkidakam (July–Aug)

കള്ളക്കർക്കിടകം. കർക്കിടകത്തിൽ പെയ്താൽ കല്ലും കരയും.

"Deceitful Karkidakam." When it rains in this month, even the stones and the riverbanks seem to cry.
